Glaucoma
in simpler terms refers to ocular hypertension.It is a disease
entity characterised by irreversible loss of structural &
functional integrity of the eye due to abnormally raised pressure.In
most of the cases of primary open angle glaucomas it is a silent
killer as the patient is asymptomatic and totally unaware of
the ongoing catastrophe in his eyes.A detailed examination of
three main parameters viz. ocular pressure by tonometry,changes
in the optic nerve head and visual field analysis by perimetry
can detect the presence of this deadly disease even in the initial
stages. |

Hence it is recommended that everyone should undergo
a routine eye examination at least once a year that includes tonometry
and fundus examn. by a qualified ophthalmologist .It is more so mandatory
if one is above 40 yrs of age,if there is a family history of glaucoma
and in patients with established glaucoma in one or both eyes as further
visual loss can be prevented by timely medical or surgical intervention. |
