HYPEROPIA
or long sight where the rays of light
are focused behind the sentient layer of retina, with
the eye at rest.Near vision is difficult and patient
needs plus lens to gain normal vision. |
|
MYOPIA
or short sight where the rays of light
are focused in front of the sentient layer of retina,
withthe eye at rest. Distant vision is difficult and
patient needs minus lenses to gain normal vision. |

ASTIGMATISM
is a kind of refractive error
wherein the rays of light entering the eye do not
come to a point focus due to the difference in
curvature or irregularities in the refracting surface.
This causes distortion of vision and patient needs cylindrical
lenses to correct the error. |

DIABETIC
RETINOPATHY
Diabetes causes considerable changes in the
retina called diabetic retinopathy.Duration of diabetes
is an important factor in its occurrence and is
further precipitated by the presence of hypertension, renal disease, pregnancy, smoking,
anaemia and uncontrolled diabetes.Advanced
stages lead to new vessel formation on retina that
bleed painlessly causing vitreoushaemorrhage,
tractional retinal detachment and blindness.
LASER treatment is given to cause regression
of new vessels to arrest further visual loss.
PRP and focal LASER for diabetic maculopathy
are done by us. |

|
| PRESBYOPIA
is a condition where the near point of the eye starts receding
due to weakening of accommodative power of the natural lens.
This is a natural phenomenon that starts around forty years
of age and patient requires plus power glasses for near vision
to overcome this. |

|
| STYE
is an acute infection of the hair follicles in the lid margin.Patient
presents with redness, pain, discharge and swelling of lid margin.Diabetes
and high refractive errors can cause recurrent styes. |

|
| STRABISMUS
or squint simply means misalignment of visual axes in an individual. One
or both eyes appear deviated and in severe cases vision is suppressed
in the deviating eye.It is possible to correct this condition
for cosmetic and functional reasons by surgery. |

|
|
| CATARACT
is clouding or opacification of the natural lens in the eye
that leads to hazy vision. Surgery is the only modality of treatment
where the cataractous lens is removed and replaced by an artificial
intra ocular lens. |

|
| GLAUCOMA
or ocular hypertension causes irreversible damage to the structural
and functional integrity of the eye due to raised pressure. In
primary open angle glaucomas,thereis gradual,progressive,painless
and permanent loss of vision.Further visual loss can be prevented
by medical or surgical intervention. |

| AGE RELATED
MACULAR DEGENERATION or senile macular degeneration
is one of the most common causes of severe irreversible loss
of central vision in individuals over 60 years of age.It is
diagnosed by the presence of yellow excresences over the macular
area called drusen.Complications can occur in the form of new
vessel formation and serous retinal detachment.Near vision can
be improved by low visual aids.A wide range of hand magnifiers, prisms
and high plus lenses are available at Sudharshana Nethralaya. |
